When a car accident occurs in Texas, the individuals involved sometimes suffer serious injuries. Usually, the negligent party is held accountable for his or her actions, but sometimes, the negligent party flees the scene. In the case of hit and run accidents, it's not always easy for the negligent party to be located and penalized. However, in the case of a recent hit and run that involved a pedestrian being struck and injured, a suspect has been arrested.
The accident occurred in Weslaco in late June. According to the authorities, a 19-year-old man has been accused of driving a car toward a group of people who were standing outside of a party. In doing so, he allegedly struck a 16-year-old high school cheerleader, which resulted in both of her legs being broken.
The driver, as well as his passenger, left the vehicle and fled the accident's scene after the crash. The girl was taken to a local medical center and then transferred to a local hospital, where she was to undergo numerous surgeries on her legs. After a two-day search for the suspect, the man turned himself in.
Pedestrians injured when hit by a vehicle may decide to pursue a civil claim against the driver if he or she is determined to be at fault in the crash. A successfully navigated claim of this nature sometimes results in monetary restitution that can help the victim regain his or her life as prior to the accident. Hit and run accidents like these are unfortunate occurrences no matter the circumstances and Texas families deserve to be aware of the options available if something like this happens to them.
