An auto accident is always a traumatic event, but when the other driver leaves the scene of the accident - leaving the victim alone and suffering - it can be emotionally devastating. With The Bates Law Firm in San Antonio, you never have to face the aftermath of an auto accident alone. We are dedicated to guiding clients through each aspect of a hit-and-run accident claim, providing personal attention and diligently following through until a final resolution is achieved.
Texas hit-and-run laws
Under Texas law, a hit-and-run is a crime that involves leaving the scene of an accident without providing identification and automobile insurance information and without rendering aid to anyone who was injured in the accident. Many hit-and-run accidents only cause property damage, allowing the victim to record the license plate number of the other vehicle and identify the negligent driver if he or she is later caught by police. However, when a hit-and-run accident causes serious injuries, it can be nearly impossible to identify the other driver.

Even if the hit-and-run driver cannot be identified, our experienced personal injury attorney may still be able to help you recover compensation from your own insurance company. Under Texas law, all liability insurers must offer uninsured motorist and underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage. You should have this coverage unless you specifically rejected the coverage in writing. There are two types of UM/UIM coverage that may cover the driver, family members and passengers in the car:
- Bodily injury - Coverage for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, disfigurement and partial or permanent disability
- Property damage - Coverage for repairs to your car, damage to personal possessions in your car, and a rental car
In addition to assisting drivers and passengers with injuries, our firm has extensive experience providing compassionate support after pedestrian accidents and may be able to provide assistance recovering compensation if you are an injured pedestrian who was struck by a hit-and-run driver.
