A man whom Houston police suspect is responsible for four car accidents all within the span of one day is now facing criminal charges. Two people were killed in these car accidents, and several more were injured. The Texas officers suspect that the man was high on anti-depressant pills at the time of the accidents.
The first accident is suspected to have occurred around 3:30 p.m. on April 26. The 34-year-old apparently caused a collision between his car and a second vehicle, and the adult and 2-year-old who were occupants of that vehicle had to be transported to an area hospital for treatment. An officer arrived at the scene of this crash, gave the man a ticket and allowed him to leave.
Sometime before 5:30 p.m., the authorities suspect that the man ran over a homeless man who was sitting off of the road. The crash killed the homeless man, and the man fled the scene. However, his front bumper with his license plate fell off of the vehicle and was left behind.
At 5:30 p.m., the man reportedly caused a third accident. Once again, a police officer arrived at the scene and ultimately allowed the man to leave. Approximately 30 minutes later, the man reportedly fell asleep at a red light and gunned the gas pedal when he woke up, causing a fourth accident. A 6-year-old boy lost his life in the crash, and his mother was critically wounded. The man is suspected of DWI, but the results of the toxicology report have not yet been disclosed.
The man now faces charges in Texas of intoxication manslaughter, intoxication assault and failure to render aid resulting from the car accidents. He also has outstanding DWI warrants from another state. As the man goes through the criminal process, the families of those who lost loved ones as well as those who suffered personal injuries can take civil action against him. The wrongful death suits and personal injury suits, if successful, may provide compensation for the plaintiffs with respect to any applicable damages that they have sustained.
