Trucking is a major part of American life in Texas and elsewhere. We depend on trucks to transport many different commodities for the betterment of our lives. Unfortunately, there are times when those same big rigs pose a threat to our safety. Recently, a truck accident in Texas highlighted this danger.
A garbage truck set off a chain reaction crash at a toll plaza in Houston recently. Eyewitnesses say that the truck had been weaving through traffic before the accident occurred. Several motorists called 911 to notify authorities. Authorities are uncertain whether the truck driver was experiencing health problems at the time of the collision.
One of the injured parties is still critical and remains in an induced coma at a local hospital. Her husband was also injured and is now unable to work. Some citizens have established a fund to assist with expenses, but their kindness cannot undo the damage done. The truck hit the toll plaza at a high rate of speed and started a fire. Two fatalities and several injuries were reported, including the driver thought responsible for the tragedy.
When a tragedy such as this truck accident occurs, many families are left with more questions than answers. Texas personal injury laws provide for the right of those injured to pursue claims for financial losses in civil court against any party deemed negligent in a manner that caused or contributed to the crash. Our wrongful death laws provide similar relief for the surviving family of any innocent victims killed. Here, the estate of the deceased truck driver as well as his employer could face claims for financial responsibility as a result of the devastating accident.
